What is Mindfulness?
Have you ever started eating a snack bar, taken a few bites only to notice that all you had left was the empty packet in your hand? Or been driving somewhere and arrived at your destination only to realise that you remember nothing about your journey? Most people have! These are common examples of “mindlessness” or “living on autopilot”. In our modern, busy lives, we constantly multi task and it’s easy to lose awareness of the present moment, when we become lost in our efforts to juggle work, home, finances and other conflicting demands. We can become exhausted and agitated. Our minds may feel unsettled with the many thoughts spinning around about the past or the future. Mindfulness is scientifically proven to settle the mind and cultivates happiness and contentment.
What are the benefits of Mindfulness?
Practising mindfulness allows us to be fully present in our life and work, and it can bring improvements in both physical and psychological symptoms as well as positive changes in attitudes and behavior such as:
- Managing relationships more effectively
- Reducing feelings of stress, worry, anxiety and low mood
- Feeling calm, more satisfied and able to savour the pleasures in life
- Feeling generally happier and more content in life
- Developing a kinder and more caring attitude towards others and towards oneself
- Becoming more emotionally resilient
- Boosting the immune system
- Lowering blood pressure
- Reducing chronic pain
- Improving sleep.
“Even brief periods of Mindfulness practice can lead to objectively measured higher cognitive skills, such as improved reaction times, working memory functioning and decision-making.” Mindful Nation All Parliamentary Report, 2015
